• Measure at the same time each day for consistency
• Use a flexible tape measure
• Keep the tape snug but not tight
• Stand straight and breathe normally
What is WHR?
The waist-to-hip ratio is a quick measure of fat distribution that may indicate your level of health risk because waist fat is more metabolically active and poses greater health risks than fat stored in the hips.
Apple vs Pear Body Shape
People who carry more weight around their waist (apple shape) have a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes compared to those who carry weight in their hips and thighs (pear shape).
Frequently Asked Questions
For men, a healthy WHR is 0.95 or less. For women, a healthy WHR is 0.80 or less. Ratios above these values indicate increased health risks.
Measure your waist at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button. Stand relaxed and don't hold your breath while measuring.
Measure your hips at the widest point of your buttocks. Keep the tape measure parallel to the floor.
WHR is a better predictor of cardiovascular disease risk than BMI alone. It indicates where fat is stored—visceral fat around the waist is more dangerous than fat around the hips.
