What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement that uses your height and weight to determine if your weight falls within a healthy range. It was developed in the 19th century by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet.

The BMI Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)²

For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 m tall:

  • BMI = 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9
  • BMI Categories

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5 - 24.9: Normal weight
  • 25.0 - 29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0 and above: Obese
  • Limitations of BMI

  • Doesn't measure body composition - muscular people may have high BMI
  • Age and gender differences aren't considered
  • Doesn't show where fat is distributed
  • What to Do With Your Results

    If your BMI is outside the normal range, consult a healthcare provider and consider additional measurements like waist circumference or body fat percentage.
